What's Involved

PhD Requirements
General PhD requirements:
  • Complete 27 semester hours of course work and 24 dissertation hours
  • Satisfy the M. A. General Literature and foreign language requirements
Rhetoric and Composition Core Course Requirements (must be completed at FSU):
  • Theories of Composition (3 hours)
  • Rhetorical Theory and Practice (3 hours)
  • Research Methodologies in Rhetoric and Composition (3 hours)
  • Visual Rhetoric (3 hours)
  • Digital Revolution and Convergence Culture (3 hours)
  • Variable options (3 hours)
    • a 3 hour special topics course (e.g, Designing Writing; Feminist Rhetoric)
    • a collection of one-credit courses student can take such as reading group, interviews, workshops, etc.
Examinations and Dissertation:
  • Pass written preliminary examinations (with an oral defense) in 4 areas: Rhetoric, Composition, Minor Area, Specialty Area
  • Complete and defend dissertation (24 hours)
MA Requirements
General MA requirements:
  • complete 33 semester hours of course work
Rhetoric and Composition Core Course Requirements:
  • Theories of Composition (3 hours)
  • Rhetorical Theory and Practice (3 hours)
  • Research Methodologies in Rhetoric and Composition (3 hours)
Additional Coursework:
  • Teaching English in College (3 hours during summer prior to first fall enrollment)
  • Teaching English as a Guided Study (3 hours during summer prior to first fall enrollment)
  • Topics in English when the topic is from rhetoric/composition (3 hours)
  • Issues in Literary and Cultural Studies (3 hours)
  • Elective course work (12 hours)
Thesis or ePortfolio options:
  • Thesis hours or other coursework (6 hours)
  • Complete and defense a thesis or take a non-thesis ePortfolio option
